Dr. Wondimagegnehu Alemu, FAIPH, is the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Institute.
He was the Country Representative for the World Health Organization (WHO) to Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria. An Ethiopian national with over thirty-five (35) years of working experience in public health, particularly in epidemiology and disease surveillance, prevention and control, and health systems both at technical and managerial levels.
He led and directed the development and implementation of the WHO Regional Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy in the Africa Region from 1997 to 2008. He led and coordinated the development of tools, guides, and protocols on disease surveillance and response.
Dr. Alemu was involved in the preparation of pandemic influenza preparedness and response plans for the African region, provided technical assistance to countries in the development of national pandemic influenza preparedness and response plans, participated in the development of training materials and training of health personnel on Avian influenza, and participated/coordinated the investigation and response to the first human case of H5N1 in Nigeria.
His international experience includes working with UNICEF Ethiopia from 1994-1997 and the WHO Regional Offices in Harare, Zimbabwe and Brazzaville from 1997-2008. Before his reassignment to Nigeria as Country Representative, he served as Country Representative in Sierra Leone from 2008-2013 and Uganda from 2013-2016.
Prior to the commencement of his international career, he also served his country in various capacities, including heading the national immunization and prophylaxis Division and the Epidemiological Surveillance Research Division (1983–1994).
Dr. Wondimagegnehu Alemu is currently a Senior Advisor to International Health Consultancy (IHC) and also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Global Health, School of Public Health, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
